Nearly 20,000 Knoxville Households Are Getting a New Recycling Day |
New collection routes begin Oct. 5, changing recycling days for about 19,000 Knoxville households and garbage days for another 2,800. |

Starting Monday, Oct. 5, thousands of Knoxville residents will need to pay closer attention to when they roll their carts to the curb.
The City of Knoxville says approximately 19,000 households will have a new every-other-week recycling day, while about 2,800 households will also see their weekly garbage pickup day change.
The changes are being made by Waste Connections, the city’s collection contractor, with the goal of putting more households’ trash and recycling pickups on the same day of the week.
For residents, that could eventually mean fewer trips to the curb and an easier schedule to remember. But during the first few weeks of the transition, it will be important to check whether your address is included.
Waste Connections has mailed notices to affected customers and has also sent alerts through its mobile app. Residents can check both their current pickup day and their new schedule using the city’s Service and Sort lookup tool.
Not every Knoxville household will see a change. Residents who receive backdoor pickup service are not affected, and downtown customers whose trash is collected directly by City of Knoxville crews will keep their existing schedules.
The new routes begin the week of Oct. 5, giving residents a little more than a week to confirm whether their collection day is changing.
For anyone unsure of their schedule, the city recommends checking before putting carts out that week rather than relying on the previous routine. |
