Fire Damages Love Kitchen, Threatening Thousands of Weekly Meals

Knoxville nonprofit begins recovery after fire damages food storage and disrupts one of East Tennessee's most vital community ministries.

For more than four decades, the Love Kitchen has quietly served neighbors facing difficult circumstances, delivering meals to homebound seniors, families in crisis, and individuals experiencing homelessness. Now, the beloved Knoxville nonprofit is asking the community for support after a fire damaged its headquarters and placed thousands of weekly meals at risk.

The fire broke out Friday morning inside a storage closet at the organization's Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard facility. Executive Director Martin Riggins arrived to find firefighters already on the scene after a delivery truck driver noticed smoke coming from the building and called 911. Thankfully, no one was inside at the time, and no injuries were reported.

While the fire itself was contained, the aftermath presents a significant challenge. Smoke, water damage, and damaged electrical systems have left the building without safe power. Even more concerning are the nonprofit's large walk-in coolers and freezers, which contain thousands of pounds of food intended for upcoming meal deliveries. Without electricity, preserving that food becomes an urgent race against time.

The Love Kitchen serves more than 3,000 meals each week, providing a critical lifeline for many East Tennesseans who cannot easily prepare meals for themselves. Any extended interruption could affect some of the community's most vulnerable residents, making recovery efforts especially important.

Despite the setback, the organization has already begun working with restoration specialists while evaluating how quickly operations can resume. For many in Knoxville, the Love Kitchen is more than a meal service. It is a symbol of care, dignity, and neighbors stepping in for one another when help is needed most.
