Weigel’s Marks 95 Years of Milk, Stores, and East Tennessee Growth

The Powell-based company began as a local dairy operation in 1931 and has grown into one of East Tennessee’s most familiar convenience-store brands.

For many East Tennesseans, a stop at Weigel’s is part of the daily routine: gas, coffee, breakfast, a snack, or a gallon of milk on the way home.

But the familiar convenience-store chain started with something much simpler: dairy.

Weigel’s is marking its 95th anniversary this year, tracing its roots back to 1931, when the family entered the dairy business in East Tennessee. The company says its early Broadacre Dairy operation eventually grew into daily milk routes across the region, helping establish Weigel’s as a trusted local dairy name long before it became known for convenience stores.

The company’s retail story began in 1958, when the first Weigel’s Farm Store opened on Sanderson Road in Knoxville. The idea was to give families an easier way to pick up milk and daily essentials as shopping habits changed. By the 1960s, Weigel’s had expanded that model and opened a walk-in convenience store on Oak Ridge Highway.

Today, Weigel’s has grown into a regional network of roughly 90 stores across East Tennessee, supported by dairy, foodservice, and distribution operations. The company still emphasizes its dairy heritage through milk, teas, juices, specialty flavors, chocolate milk, egg nog, and its Milk Club loyalty program.

To mark the anniversary, Weigel’s launched a “95 for 95” sweepstakes, giving 95 winners each month the chance to receive free milk for a year through the summer campaign. The promotion ties the company’s milestone back to the product that started the business.

The anniversary is also a reminder of how local businesses can evolve with a region. Weigel’s started as a dairy serving Knoxville-area families and became a convenience-store brand woven into commutes, school mornings, lake trips, and road stops across East Tennessee.

For readers, the local takeaway is simple: one of the area’s most familiar gas-station stops is also one of its longest-running homegrown food and retail stories
