Oak Ridge added another major piece to its growing nuclear economy this week as Amentum officially opened its Global Nuclear headquarters at 151 Lafayette Drive.

The new facility serves as the central hub for Amentum’s nuclear business and houses more than 150 employees, including engineers, project managers and other specialists working across the company’s global nuclear operations.

For Oak Ridge, the announcement is significant because it adds a different kind of investment to the region’s recent wave of nuclear development.

Much of the attention over the past year has focused on new reactors, fuel manufacturing and demonstration projects. Amentum’s move adds a headquarters and workforce component — bringing leadership, technical expertise and long-term talent development into the same local ecosystem.

More than an office opening

The facility also includes Amentum’s Nuclear Center of Excellence, which is designed to support training, innovation and technical collaboration across the company’s nuclear work.

That gives Oak Ridge another role beyond research and manufacturing. The city is increasingly becoming a place where nuclear companies are locating not only projects, but also the people and operations that guide them.

The concentration of expertise matters for a region already home to Oak Ridge National Laboratory, federal nuclear facilities, advanced reactor projects and a growing number of private-sector companies.

$500,000 commitment to local students

Amentum paired the headquarters opening with a new workforce initiative aimed at building the next generation of nuclear employees.

The company announced the Amentum Nuclear Scholars Program, committing $500,000 over five years to support curriculum development and scholarships through Roane State Community College and the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.

The program is expected to help students pursue education and training connected to nuclear engineering, technology and related fields.

The first cohort of students is expected to begin later this year.

For East Tennessee, that may be one of the most important parts of the announcement.

As nuclear companies expand in and around Oak Ridge, the demand for engineers, technicians, project managers and skilled workers is also expected to grow. Partnerships with local colleges and universities can help create a pipeline from classrooms into those jobs.

Oak Ridge’s nuclear footprint keeps widening

Amentum’s headquarters arrives as Oak Ridge is experiencing renewed investment across several corners of the nuclear industry.

Recent projects in the area include advanced fuel manufacturing, reactor demonstration facilities and research expansion. The addition of a global headquarters strengthens the business and workforce side of that growth.

That broader mix could help Oak Ridge compete not just as a place where nuclear technology is developed, but as a place where companies build teams, make decisions and train future employees.

What it means for the region

For local residents, the immediate impact is another sizable employer and another signal that the region’s nuclear economy is expanding.

Longer term, the scholarship program could create new opportunities for students at Roane State and UT, while the headquarters itself could draw additional suppliers, contractors and professional services into the area.

The opening also reinforces Oak Ridge’s increasingly important position in the national nuclear industry.

The city has spent decades associated with nuclear research and federal science. Now, more private companies are choosing Oak Ridge for commercial operations, workforce development and corporate investment.

Amentum’s new headquarters is the latest example of that shift — and another sign that Oak Ridge’s nuclear story is still growing.
