New Funding for Main Streets
Tennessee officials announced more than $3.9 million in Downtown Improvement Grants for 14 communities on October 28.
The program supports upgrades such as building façades, streetscapes, signs and downtown gateways.
For East Tennessee readers, the list includes Newport, Lenoir City and Etowah, along with Cleveland in nearby Bradley County.
East Tennessee Awards
Newport in Cocke County is receiving $245,511.
Lenoir City in Loudon County was awarded $225,000.
Etowah in McMinn County will receive $350,000, and Cleveland in Bradley County received $300,000.
These are announced grant awards, not evidence that the individual projects have already been completed.
How the Program Works
The grants come through Tennessee's Rural Economic Opportunity funding and the Department of Economic and Community Development.
Recipients must be participating Tennessee Main Street or Tennessee Downtowns communities.
Each grant recipient is required to match 25 percent of the state award.
Why Downtown Improvements Matter
Small improvements to façades, pedestrian spaces and wayfinding can make historic commercial districts easier to navigate and more attractive to residents and visitors.
The particular projects and construction timetables may differ by community.
Readers can watch their city announcements for approved plans, contracts and construction dates.
For East Tennessee towns, these awards offer a chance to strengthen their downtown identity while supporting local businesses. |
