A New Classroom Experience

Sevierville Intermediate School unveiled an upgraded technology lab on October 22 after winning a $27,500 award through Oak Ridge Associated Universities' Extreme Classroom Makeover program.

Teacher Logan Woods won the program's grand prize and Viewers' Choice Award, bringing new hands-on learning equipment to the school.

The completed project was introduced at a student and community reveal event.

What's Inside

The updated room contains 3D printers, virtual reality headsets, robotics equipment, a drone, a driving simulator and a smart greenhouse.

Rather than simply watching demonstrations, students will be able to explore practical uses for emerging technology.

The equipment can support lessons involving engineering, computer science, design and problem-solving.

Why Hands-On Learning Matters

STEM education often becomes more accessible when students can test an idea, see the outcome and make improvements.

Tools such as robots and printers create opportunities to combine creativity with technical reasoning.

A smart greenhouse can also connect computing and sensors to environmental science and agriculture.

The school's new resources are part of a broader effort to introduce careers and technical skills at younger ages.

Regional Connection

ORAU is based in Oak Ridge, making the award an example of a regional scientific organization investing in nearby classrooms.

The laboratory makeover is complete, but the full impact will emerge as teachers incorporate the tools into student projects.

For Sevier County families, the immediate development is a richer technology-learning environment at their local school.
