City Council Approves Multiple Investments

Knoxville City Council voted October 27 to approve new funding for affordable housing, sidewalk repairs and other capital improvements.

The actions combine neighborhood and accessibility projects with work aimed at lowering long-term public-facility energy expenses.

The city approved $750,000 through its Affordable Rental Development Fund toward a planned development at 360 Lovell Road near Turkey Creek.

Affordable Housing Near Turkey Creek

The Union at Smoky Mountains development is planned to provide 100 income-restricted apartments.

The city's contribution is specifically tied to 25 deeply affordable rental homes within the larger development.

The funding approval does not mean the project has been completed or that apartments are ready for occupancy.

Sidewalks and Public Facilities

Council also approved a $549,000 agreement covering replacement of approximately 21,000 square feet of damaged sidewalk at 27 locations.

Other authorized work includes $3.4 million in efficient lighting at 75 city-owned facilities.

Reported capital items also include $500,000 for accessibility improvements at the Holston River boat launch, $700,000 for water damage repairs at the Convention Center and $280,000 for safety and accessibility near the World's Fair Exhibition Hall promenade.

What Residents Should Know

City officials say the lighting investment is expected to pay for itself through energy savings over approximately 12.5 years.

Construction timelines for the approved work will depend on contracting, scheduling and individual project milestones.

Residents should watch for location-specific notices as sidewalk work and facility improvements move toward completion.
