A Major Gift for Appalachian Music
Maryville College has announced a $3 million gift from the Mike Curb Foundation to establish the Mike Curb Center for Appalachian Music.
The center is scheduled to launch in the 2027–28 academic year and will support research, teaching and public programs exploring the region's musical heritage.
Music as a Living Tradition
The initiative is designed to explore Appalachian music as a living, evolving tradition shaped by generations of cultural exchange.
College leaders say the center will connect music with history, sociology, psychology and other fields while creating opportunities for students, scholars and regional musicians.
The emphasis extends beyond preserving old recordings to understanding the music still being made in Southern Appalachia.
What the Gift Will Fund
According to the college, the gift will establish a permanent endowment, help construct a recording studio in the Clayton Center for the Arts, support a Curb Professor of Appalachian Music and provide an annual operating budget.
A consultant and faculty advisory council will help shape the new center's programs.
The college also expects connections with planned initiatives focused on regional wellness and outdoor studies.
Why It Matters for East Tennessee
East Tennessee has deep musical traditions that connect local communities to audiences around the world.
A permanent academic home can help document those traditions, encourage new research and provide ways for future generations to participate.
The new center is announced and funded, but its launch remains a future milestone rather than a facility already open to visitors.
Watch for curriculum, recording studio and public-event updates as the 2027–28 launch approaches. |
