October has arrived in East Tennessee, and the regional calendar is quickly filling with festivals, outdoor adventures and community gatherings.

This month's lineup also gives 865 Daily readers an opportunity to venture beyond Knoxville. Events are coming up in Newport, Lenoir City, the Great Smoky Mountains and elsewhere across the region.

Here are several worth putting on the calendar, listed in chronological order.

October 3–4: Newport Harvest Street Festival

Downtown Newport | Cocke County

One of Cocke County's longtime fall traditions returns this weekend with the 39th Annual Newport Harvest Street Festival.

Downtown Newport will fill with live music, food vendors, craft demonstrations, rides and games during the two-day celebration.

For readers looking for something to do immediately, this is one of the strongest options of the weekend. It also offers a good excuse to make a fall drive east and spend some time exploring Newport and the surrounding area.

October 10: Walk 2 Remember & Kick'N Car Show

Lenoir City Park | Loudon County

A community event with a meaningful mission comes to Lenoir City on Saturday, October 10.

The Walk 2 Remember & Kick'N Car Show combines an Alzheimer's and dementia awareness walk with a classic car show at Lenoir City Park.

Hosted by Our PLACE Memory Day Center, the gathering supports awareness of dementia and the needs of individuals and families affected by memory loss.

The combination of a community walk and classic cars gives the event appeal beyond those directly touched by dementia and creates an opportunity for neighbors to come together around an important cause.

October 10: HoLa Festival

Loudon County

Also scheduled for October 10 is the HoLa Festival, a community celebration of Hispanic and Latino heritage.

The festival adds cultural variety to the month's event calendar and gives Loudon County residents another opportunity to gather for a community-focused celebration.

Readers interested in attending should confirm the final venue and schedule before heading out.

October 10: UT ACE Fall Hiking Series

Departing from the UT International House | Knoxville

For anyone who would rather spend Saturday on the trail, the University of Tennessee's Active and Creative Engagement program has a fall hiking outing scheduled for October 10.

The group is scheduled to stage at the International House, 1623 Melrose Place in Knoxville, with the day's program running from 6 a.m. until 2 p.m.

The hike heads toward the Great Smoky Mountains area and combines outdoor recreation with the social experience of exploring the mountains as part of a group.

Because participation requirements and availability can change, prospective hikers should confirm details with the program before attending.

October 24: Adaptive Hike in the Great Smoky Mountains

Great Smoky Mountains National Park

Great Smoky Mountains National Park is scheduled to offer a ranger-led adaptive hike on Saturday, October 24, with sessions at 10 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.

The program is designed to make a guided park experience available to visitors with varying mobility levels.

Rather than emphasizing distance or strenuous hiking, the outing combines an accessible outdoor experience with ranger interpretation of the park's natural environment.

We've highlighted this one separately in our East Tennessee Outdoors section because it offers a particularly interesting way for more people to experience the Smokies.

October 24–26: Cocke County Bluegrass Festival

Cocke County Fairgrounds | Newport

Newport returns to our calendar later in the month with the Cocke County Bluegrass Festival, scheduled for October 24–26 at the Cocke County Fairgrounds.

The multi-day event is expected to feature national and regional bluegrass performers along with food trucks, local vendors and makers, family entertainment and a Jeep showcase.

The festival carries additional significance for a community that has spent the past two years recovering and rebuilding following Hurricane Helene.

Advance admission is listed at $10, with gate admission at $25 and online-only VIP admission at $30.

A Good Month to Explore Beyond Your Usual Route

One of the advantages of living in East Tennessee is that a weekend outing doesn't have to mean going very far.

Newport, Lenoir City and the Smokies each offer something different this month, from traditional fall festivals and live music to community causes and outdoor adventures.

And with October only beginning, the calendar will continue to grow.

Sometimes the best weekend plan starts simply by choosing a direction and seeing what another East Tennessee community has going on.
